I watched Fuller playing for Southampton today. If he's the best since Finney, I can see why North End have never managed to gain promotion.
Peter Thompson would run rings round him, as would Spavin, not to mention Bobby Charlton. Perhaps you didn't go to Deepdale when they were playing for Preston ?

Fuller was superb when he played for Preston. Spavin was a craftsman, very good mid field player at that level ( Div2/3) Peter Thompson had incredible skills, I was at Old Trafford when he skipped round half a dozen of the opposition and shot the ball from the edhge of the penalty area into the bottom right hand corner ofthe net to give us a well earned victory in the FA cup. Incidentally he served us with a meal at his pub in the Lake District, The Hare and Hounds. A few years later I read he had been done for drink driving and was now in a restaurant near Harrogate.
Alex Dawson..my favourite player of all north enders .. and Nobby Lawton absolute steals from Manure played in the team that just missed out on promotion and lost 3-2 undeservedly at Wembley to the cockney bubble blowers ( who I shall off the forum evermore refer to as ******* ). Fuller in his short time at Deepdale scored 2 of the best goals I have seen in my life. One, part of a hat-trick against Burnley when he ran from the half-way line beating 3 players before cracking the ball past the bemused Papadopolous, the other at Leicester in a similar display, a goal that was voted goal of the season. Since then Fuller has gone backwards, whether it is his operation that's troubling him, his dodgy knees or a confidence thing because he wasn;t getting regular football I don't know.
Just out of interest David how many times did you see Fuller playing for Preston? I saw every one of his home games and a few away, just as I did with Thompson and Spavin so how do you think you are qualified to judge from the comfort of your air conditioned arm chair after watching him play for Southampton? I'm talking about his games for Preston. I hope he is past his best now. I think what he did to PNE, allow them to pay all his medical bills and wages while he was recovering, then as soon as he recovered left for a bigger club was disgusting. I hope his left leg drops off!!!

I hate this lot, absolutely hate them, except the coloured guy of course because that would be racist, I think.

Noel said...."...how do you think you are qualified to judge from the comfort of your air conditioned arm chair after watching him play"....It's a recliner Noel, and it isn't air conditioned, the house is, not the chair.
You seem to have a whole lot of hatred in you Noel. Perhaps you need to seek out an anger management specialist, having that much hatred isn't healthy.
And BTW, I was never lucky enough to see the great Puskas, Di Stefano, Platini, Cantona, I've never seen the present day stars such as Henry, Rooney, Lampard, etc, etc, but from my recliner I can still tell that they are great players. In fact, if you have spent most of your Saturday's watching the likes of North End while I have been camped out here in my recliner every footballing Saturday watching the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, River Plate, Santos, Real Madrid, Barcelona, etc, etc, quite frankly, I think I would be the better judge of a class player than you are ??? And I think your choice of Fuller as being the best North End player since Sir Tom Finney confirms that.

Hey dear David, as I once said, you can't be beaten, (more's the pity) . I don't have any hatred in me believe me. If I say things like "I hope his left leg drops off" it's black humour, not intended to be taken seriously. (West Ham is different obviously[Wink] )
Obviously you are very full of your opinions and fine, why not. You are entitled to them as I am to mine. Anybody who can judge a player's performance for a team such as Fuller's for PNE, without actually seeing him play a single game must indeed be a very good judge. But on what basis are you forming your opinions, of somebody whom you have never seen playing for Preston? Guesswork? I don't like the type of football you say you watch, I think you may be surprised at the amount of anti-premiership football there is in England. Created by Sky . A division full of foreign players. Overpaid, over-hyped and over here. My that's hatred for you.[}Smile]

So it`s handbags at thirty paces is it?[Tongue][Tongue] Although Fuller was a very special talent, he was also a very (at times) lazy and selfish player. I lost count of the number of times team mates were tearing their hair out when all that was required of him was a roll of the ball across the penalty area for a simple tap-in. Perhaps he now wishes he`d stayed here. As for myself - I`m glad it turned out as it did. Dave Nugent is a far better prospect .

I don't have a problem with David. I just wondered how he could judge a player's performance for PNE when he had never seen him playing for them. i agree ,Nugent is a better talent than Fuller. He's the best North End player I've seen since Finney retired. [8D]

Jim, That's a Texas sized avatar you have there.
Noel, I didn't judge Fullers North End performance, but to see him performing for S'ampton knowing that you had mentioned him in the same sentence as Tom Finney !! It's just not on Noel. Of course, looking back, you weren't comparing him to Tom Finney, that would have been unforgivable.
However, I'll stay with Peter Thompson who went on to gain several full England caps. Which other North Ender has done that since Finney retired ? Who was the last North End player, actually playing for Preston to gain a full England cap.... Finney ???
Oh BTW, North End are on our telly Monday, v Derby. Wonders never cease. I've bought a new TV channel that is showing the Championship League matches. Not bad, $11 a month. I've already seen the Sheff Utd v Leicester, S'ampton v Wolves, and Leeds v Millwall today.
Sorry Noel, but the skill level in all three of those games was well below the Premiership. Face it, there's nothing but has been's playing...Ince, Wise, Fuller, some donkey that used to play for the Rovers, I mean come on lad, don't try telling me you enjoy that stuff. I saw the Community Shield match...such skill.
Seeing as you disapprove of the Premiership, if Preston had been promoted, would you have perhaps switched allegiance to say Burnley so as not to be bothered watching the prima donna's in the Premiership ?? I think not !! Your several hundred £'s would have been right there buying your season ticket.
I still don't believe you hate that young family standing there having a day out...just because they support a team other than North End.
Let me guess...you were a football hooligan in your teens [?][?][}Smile]

Jim, This is what a Discussion Page is all about, discussing our differences. Getting my handbag out never came to mind [Smile]
But if Noel does try to compare Fuller with Sir Tom, never mind my handbag.....my kitbag will be out.[8D][8D]

I never compared Fuller with Sir Tom. You twist words until they make what you think you would like them to make.(you should have been a referee..woops) I said , Fuller, in my opinion was the best player I'd seen playing for North End since Tom Finney. Which makes him about 0.01% as good as Sir Tom. Incidentally I wouldn't totally disagree with Peter Thompson, or Howard Kendall, I still remember that goal of his in the FA Cup replay against Forest..yes I went to the away game as well. The replay was in the evening and it was snowing heavily.Kendall cracked in a 25 yarder, what a pity he was sold do doon afterwards, we never saw him at his best, that was saved for Everton. These days the softies that play in the Premier would be too cold to turn out and play in those conditions.

In my reply above, I said..

"Of course, looking back, you weren't comparing him to Tom Finney, that would have been unforgivable."

Then you come back and say..
"I never compared Fuller with Sir Tom. You twist words until they make what you think you would like them to make.(you should have been a referee..woops) I said , Fuller, in my opinion was the best player I'd seen playing for North End since Tom Finney."

I thought I'd straightened that bit out with my post.

I noticed you didn't deny being a football hooligan [?] [}Smile] [8D]
