- Peter Harris - 25-Feb-2011 Funny that the greenies are crowing about this, hydrocarbon gases (particularly the main constituent of biogenic digestion being methane)have a global warming potential of 72 times that of CO2, the main emission of industrial processes. I would think that smells from biogenesis=methane= high GWP, has anyone looked at this? or the possibility of preventing emissions to the atmosphere from this plant being in the interests of the environment. - filmoss - 25-Feb-2011 quote: Originally posted by Peter Harris Funny that the greenies are crowing about this, hydrocarbon gases (particularly the main constituent of biogenic digestion being methane)have a global warming potential of 72 times that of CO2, the main emission of industrial processes. Pete, we dont buy into the Global warming thing on here !! The smell on the other hand is a problem as you will no doubt find out soon ! Talking of soon Pete, what date ya coming over ? - Top Cat - 25-Feb-2011 Part of the explanation/apology given by Dr Waller (and with which the Environment Agency seemed to concur)was that they had considered closing the plant down whilst the problem was rectified BUT that would have caused more problems than it resolved. I suppose the question that we should have asked was "Problems for whom?" If it was a question of stopping the process, clearing out the filters, refilling and recharging them before restarting the process obviously that would have taken many weeks, been expensive, and not have dealt with rubbish whilst that was going on. However I would have thought that that would have stopped the smells pretty quickly. Perhaps we should have demanded this. Perhaps we still should. - noel - 25-Feb-2011 I think we should Tim. We certainly didn't get the smells before the unit opened and the rubbish was being disposed of somewhere. I just hope they get one heck of a fine for this, it's disgusting. Thankfully the wind is blowing from North West at the moment so I can walk my dog and breath in safely. - filmoss - 26-Feb-2011 Sat here now 20 past 10 on a Sat night and it stinks outside ! We were in the Railway pub earlier and it stank inside there ! I have just shut the patio doors and it now smells in my house ! I am going to make a concerted effort to have this cancer removed from our town ! [xx(] - Peter Harris - 27-Feb-2011 Hey Phil - it sounds like the unrest is stirring - good to see, I understand there is a similar plant in Sydney NSW - Wonder if they have stench problems, maybe I can find out. I'll be back around 28th of March - I've got your mobile so I'll call nearer the time to arrange to survey the watering holes of Leyland Town. Pete - filmoss - 27-Feb-2011 Nice one Pete see ya then ! The smell is really bad again today !! Its beyond a joke now ! - noel - 27-Feb-2011 I visited one of my sons, lives across the line from where you are filmoss, Woodville Street around noon today. The smell was vile, why weren't they made to stop the process until they'd rectified it? - chops - 28-Feb-2011 Since they admitted it at the forum, it seems that the smell has got worse. One wonders if they had any temporary measures in place, to try and keep a lid on it presumably, but have removed those now its all out in the open...? - Top Cat - 28-Feb-2011 Earlier today (Monday) I didn't think that the smell was too bad in the Bispham Avenue area, but the smell got worse as the day progressed, and I have been told that it was bad in Farington, and in Leyland in the vicinity of Morrisons. It obviously depends upon the wind direction, and the atmospheric conditions etc. Just because you don't smell it one day don't assume that it has stopped. Keep the complaints going in to the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60, and to Global Renewables themselves on 0800 633 5463 because that may be the only way that we can get it closed. |
