- shuffy - 23-Mar-2005 Welcome Tony, yet another exleylander who has settled in the tranquility of Whittle hills. - anacortesdamp - 24-Mar-2005 Based on bitter experience, I would say just get a new, XP-compatible printer. They're cheap enough (at least over here!) that it's not worth hassling with the incompatibilites. We have a very nice HP printer/scanner/fax/copier which set me back about $800 back in 1998. It was part of a top-of-the-line Dell system back then. This is now my wife's personal computer. We bought a new e-Machines packege just before Christmas. It has a 3.2 Ghz processor, 512MB RAM, a 160GB hard drive, DVD-RW and CD, and a 17" LCD flat-panel display. It was about $850, after rebates. It came with a LexMark USB-connected printer, so we've retired the old one, except when we need a fax machine. On balance, I don't think upgrading from Win98SE to later versions is worth the hassle unless you buy a new computer. The greatest advantage of 98SE is that the hackers aren't the slightest bit interested in it. I haven't had any viruses, worms or spyware on that computer in 9 months, despite fairly rudimentary preotection. I'm beating them off with a stick on my XP-Home box - it's a real pain. Older is not necessarily obsolete - if it does the job, stay with it. Better the devil you know. If there was an easy way to go back to 98SE on my new box, I'd do it in a flash, but I'd lose USB 2.0 and a bunch of other features I kinda like. Frank - normandbarb - 26-Mar-2005 Thanks Tony I will try them tomorrow and I will let you know how I get on, they look really complicated ata the moment, lager has taken over!quote: Originally posted by TonyL Try these links. http://printscan.about.com/od/printerandscannerdrivers/a/DrivingDaisyW.htm http://www.smartcomputing.com/messages/answer.asp?guid=&messageid=454335&qtype=&sid=&WordList=&searchtype=&df=&dt=&sort=&cmd=&pg=11&uname= - Karen - 26-Mar-2005 Drunk again[ ][ ]
- DavidBatty - 27-Mar-2005 I can't imagine going back to Windows 98, when I changed from 98 to XP and then to SP2 I found that none of my software was affected, My system just got better and more stable. - selly75 - 10-Apr-2005 hi you need to download the latest drivers to be compatable if you go on driverguide.com then look for the type in the model your printer is this will then work with xp - anacortesdamp - 11-Apr-2005 David B: I just bought a new machine, with XP. I put my old 98SE machine in the kitchen on a wireless network. We have Verizon as our DSL ISP. They provide MSN Premium as the browser. Everything was working fine at first, but my comoputer didn't have Service pack 2 installed. I installed it, and it blew most of Verizon's software out of the tub. Their anaylser software isn't compatible, so I can't get any on-line help. Their web-site builder doesn't work at all. I get a very brief message in the XP slot for "can't do that, dummy", but it's gone before I can trap it. On balance, I'd say 98SE was more useful and stable than XP/Sp2. Maybe I shoulda bought a MAC! Frank |
