- LDunlop76 - 21-Mar-2006 quote: Originally posted by Lancashire-Lad as the dump was filled pipes were laid to collect the methane and is used by the city to make steam that drives generators for city street lights, What an excellent idea. It proves the saying true: Where there's muck, there's brass! - Martin - 22-Oct-2006 This one is still rumbling on... quote: A civil engineering group sparked controversy today (Wednesday) after supporting disputed plans for a Leyland waste plant. The Institution of Civil Engineers has come out in favour of proposals for the plant in Farington Moss, saying that "bold measures are required to tackle the looming catastrophe" posed by stretched landfill sites. http://www.lep.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=73&ArticleID=1827618 What a load of rubbish! - Spitfire - 22-Oct-2006 quote:- `County Council bosses say have been consulting on the issue for the last 10 years.` With whom ????? - William R - 22-Oct-2006 Jim, could they have been discussing this with our friends over the pond. They seem to be more in the picture than anyone who lives here.?? - Alan Marsden - 22-Oct-2006 Years ago ,someone ( I forget who) told me that the electrical power required to run the tramcars at Blackpool was generated by burning the waste collecteed in the town, I wonder if anyone else has heard of this, is that indeed what occurrs ? I have heard recently that this technology is frequently used in Sweden, I personally would like to know more about such schemes as the idea appeals , as someone has previously pointed out the city of Toronto ( I don't live there ) has a fleet of several hundred trucks employed to deliver it's waste each day to some landfill site in Michigan USA. There must be some short term financial advantage to someone/body in doing this, but even so the notion of shipping waste hundreds of km. to a landfill site doesn't seem the right thing to do, to me , especially when the technology to deal with the problem is available ! - William R - 23-Oct-2006 Many years ago, the Company I worked for had to dispose of large amount of asbestos based products ( brake linings, clutch facings etc.) The disposal was into disused coal workings, where these were placed and back-filled with rubble, possibly in the hope that out of sight was out of mind. A lot of underground workings have been used this way, a legacy for the future, perhaps. The site was also used by other firms with products for disposal. As an aside - how is nuclear waste disposed of??? Another thread maybe, I once visited Sellafield. - Martin - 20-Nov-2006 quote: A pressure group hopes to raise £60,000 to mount a legal challenge to prevent a massive waste processing plant opening in Leyland. The Residents Against Waste Site action group (RAWS), is to seek a judicial review of Lancashire County Council's decision to approve planning permission for the plant, to be run by Global Renewables Ltd, at a site on Centurion Way, Farington. quote: The RAWS public meeting will be held at St Paul's Church Hall, Farington Moss, at 7.30 pm on Tuesday, November 21. http://www.prestoncitizen.co.uk/display.var.1026322.0.protestors_in_legal_fight_against_waste_plant.php - laurajane - 20-Nov-2006 my dad is involved with this, so if anyone wishes to help raise the 60k required to pay for the appeal, then please PM me ur details and ill pass them on. - Martin - 20-Sep-2007 quote: Protesters fighting plans to build a waste technology plant in Leyland took their case to the High Court in London today. Local objectors, Residents Against Waste Site Ltd (RAWS), mounted the legal challenge following the Lancashire County Council's decision in November last year to allow the state-of-the-art plant to be built on the 14.6 hectare former site of the Leyland Vehicles Test Track at Farington Moss. The campaigners argue the county council have not properly followed European Union rules on schemes which could have environmental consequences. http://www.prestoncitizen.co.uk/news/headlines/display.var.1703722.0.waste_plant_campaigners_in_high_court.php - Smithy - 24-Sep-2007 Wasn't there something on ITV news last night to say petitioners against the recycling plant had lost their appeal? |
