Silly Season - LDunlop76 - 27-Jul-2007

The end of July often marks the start of "silly season" in the nation's press - Parliament have started their summer recess and there's less to report on, so the silly stories come out. I thought I'd start a thread on the daft stories appearing in "silly season" - please feel free to join in!

Bling to the boil

It's covered in diamonds and costs £100,000. So does the world's most expensive pan cook well, asks Phil Hogan

Sunday July 22, 2007
The Observer

What do you give the cook who has everything? Why, obviously, the world's most expensive saucepan! Harrods will be selling them, though not until September, which gives everybody (especially those laggards who haven't got round to changing their euros back after the summer holidays) time to scrape together the £100,000. Yes, yes - rather steep for a pan, but it is made of gold and diamonds, which don't grow on trees yet. But will it improve one's egg-poaching skills? Or are we talking about superior, um... heat distribution, or anti-stickability in some as yet unguessable (by me) way? Has someone invented a pan that doesn't set all the fire alarms off while you're busy on the phone for a few short minutes? For a hundred grand I'm looking for a pan that can not only cook but take the beans out of the cupboard.

you and me both Linda LOL(beans out of the cupboard)
Personally I think its obscene to spend so much money on something like that! and someone will I'm sure!

Dedra, If you think that`s obscene, what about the chap who paid £140,000 for a drinks bill last week in a Mayfair club? They didn`t arrive at the club until after midnight anyway!

- shuffy - 29-Jul-2007

That is appalling even if i had that much money I couldn't bring myself to spend so much on something so trivial, thats going to go down the loo anyway LOL

From the fashion pages:
Apparently jodhpurs are going to be THE fashion look for the coming season. Oh puhlease! Is that with or without the pony?

Oh and Victoria Beckham is wearing 5.5 inch heels - no wonder she's got bunions!

Great white shark sighted off Cornwall! Eek!
http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2007340903,00.html

Or was it? This is what a shark expert had to say:
'This is tabloid journalism at its worst: factually wrong, scare-mongering and sensationalistic,' shark expert Jeremy Stafford-Deitsch told DIVE. 'There is not a shred of evidence to suppose that a white shark has been spotted off Cornwall. The Sun has been grossly irresponsible in twisting quotations and publishing such easily falsified nonsense. The general public has been misinformed, people's holidays disrupted, shark conservation damaged and the struggling Cornish tourism industry affected.'

Looks like it's safe to go for a paddle after all!
