At Last!!!! - Spitfire - 11-May-2003 I understand that a much loved and sadly missed asset has just returned to Seven stars - a general hardware shop. No doubt most of you will remember Sleddons, who sold everything from clothes pegs to pet food. What a loss it was to the area when he retired! The new traders should do very well if, like me, people find themselves popping out to Berry`s or B&Q every five minuits (or so if feels). - LDunlop76 - 11-May-2003 The good thing about a proper hardware shop was the man behind the counter could give you advice if you needed it, unlike the spotty 17 year olds stocking the shelves in most DIY superstores. - noel - 11-May-2003 We used to have a great one at the bottom of Bristol Avenue, Croppers. When I came back from Wiltshire to live in Farington Moss there was Tommy Balls at Tardy Gate, you could get anything from fork handles to four candles ( apologies to the 2 Ronnies.) - dedwardsa - 11-May-2003 Indeed. Yesterday I wanted a 21mm socket, 1/2" drive. Being unable to find one in the likely places, I went more in desparation than hope, to B&Q & Do it all. On each occasion, I was directed to the electrical section. Dipsticks! - LDunlop76 - 12-May-2003 quote: Originally posted by noel you could get anything from fork handles to four candles ( apologies to the 2 Ronnies.) We regularly quote that sketch in our house, Noel! Our sense of humour seems to coincide [8D] - LDunlop76 - 12-May-2003 quote: Originally posted by dedwardsa Indeed. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys? - noel - 13-May-2003 quote: Originally posted by LDunlop76 quote: Originally posted by noel you could get anything from fork handles to four candles ( apologies to the 2 Ronnies.) - LDunlop76 - 13-May-2003 I've taken a leaf out of your book, Noel, and am currently re-reading the novels. They're just as funny second time around! - littlerosie - 16-May-2003 Ivan Sleddon's hardware shop wasn't at Seven Stars, but was opposite the end of Dunkirk Lane in the shop that became a shoe shop and is now a tanning studio. There was a hardware shop at Seven Stars in the building which is now a dentists, but the name escapes me at the moment. ~The chap that owned it lived in a house on Slater Lane right on the edge of the river and the crossroads with Schleswig Way. - Spitfire - 16-May-2003 Hi Littlerosie, What you say is quite correct about the location of Ivans shop. I have always refered to the whole area as `Seven stars`. Perhaps you could tell me what the official boundry is. As a matter of interest, the other one was called Chaddertons. |
