Staying logged in - changed? - anacortesdamp - 03-Nov-2012

This one's for you, Martin:

Ever since I became a member of the forum, I've never bothered logging off. Consequently, my preferences for which of the sub-forums I'm interested in has stayed the same and those I choose not to look at have remained out of sight.

In the last week or two, it seems that I've been logged off by the forum. I have automatic log-on, so I didn't have to log on again. However, my preferences have disappeared, and I get all the stuff I have no interest in back in the menu.

Has the log-in logic been changed to drop a log-in if not re-accessed for a certain length of time? I usually log on at about 7:00 local (15:00 UK time)every day. I have no interest in "What's on" - I'm 4000 miles away. I'm also not particularly interested in local sports for the same reason.

It's not WW3, but it is an annoyance to get all those categories that are of no interest back on the menu.

Oh Frank. is that such a big problem on the world wide scheme of things??

The login hasn't changed Frank. It's controlled by a cookie on your computer, so something must have happened to your cookie.

I randomly find myself logged out when I come here, and as Martin says... its nothing to do with the forum, its to do with your/my computer, the login details are stored on your computer in a cookie. If your computer decides to delete that cookie (often by people using software to hide their browsing or to clean up their computer of 'junk') then the forum asks for the password and your computer does not supply it. In that case you have to supply the password to get in and it is re-written back on to your computer in a cookie.

Have you recently changed your computer settings to 'Not allow cookies'? I know a few people have because they think they are something scary.

I have told people for years that a cookie is just a piece of text on your computer that holds your preferences, but I still get people saying 'well I don't like it' etc. That can cause problems like you describe if you have altered your settings or are running software to delete cookies.

Must have been a hasty history delete eh ! [Wink]

I haven't changed any of my settings. Most of the time, I use IE as my browser, as some sites I visit are not compatible with Chrome or Firefox. IE is such a POS that it's probably something in there that's causing the problem. If Chrome were compatible with everything, I'd ditch IE in a flash.
