Leyland Barbers - rocketmanjohn - 11-May-2002 This is an odd topic but I'm sure there are many stories. Here's a couple for starters. Who remembers 'The Demon Barber'. Was it Jack Tongue ? he was situated on Golden Hill close to the Queens, he was reputed to be able to cut hair so fast that you could catch up with your pals after a quick scalping. Then there was Makinson on Turpin Green. He chain smoked and many is the time a hushed crowd waiting their turn would wait for the enormous length of ash he produced to fall, I for one never saw it happen-he was brilliant. Likewise, his ash tray was allways full to the brim, but never overflowed. Truly a highly talented man, but a lousy barber. Great entertainment and a cheap hair cut. - JohnH - 11-May-2002 Don't remember going to any barber shops in Leyland! It was always down to our dad - clippers, scissors, brill-cream then face the school mates on Monday morining! My sister and I were OK - all he had to do was cut in a straight line across the back as we both had long hair, but my brothers......! Awwww, poor lads were always getting snipped on the ear with the scissors or nicked on the neck with the dubbers..... and then that playground taunt - "Haircu-ut! Haircu-ut!" Do kids shout that anymore? |
