Wrongly sentenced to death - LDunlop76 - 20-Feb-2006 I've just read this article and was very moved by it: http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,1713424,00.html Although Sunny Jacobs spent 17 years on death row for a crime she didn't commit, she has been able to forgive those who put her in jail. I'm not sure I could in the circumstances. The most upsetting thing for me was that her partner had been executed by the time the pair were exonnerated, and the electric chair malfunctioned, meaning he took over 13 minutes to die. - noel - 20-Feb-2006 One man's word convicts 2 innocent people, and that word from a man who is himself a convicted criminal. How many more have been wrongly executed? Hang your head in shame Bush, Schwartzeneger and any others who support capital punishment. - David - 20-Feb-2006 quote: Originally posted by noel Hang your head in shame Bush, Schwartzeneger and any others who support capital punishment. I support capital punishment, always have, always will. Sadly mistakes are made. None bigger than the John Christie case in London where Timothy Eavens was hung for a murder he did't commit.. http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/history/christie/index_1.html You should have waited a couple of days before you posted that Noel. You posted in anger because North End lost [} ]
- noel - 20-Feb-2006 No, not in anger David. I think life time imprisonment is far worse a punishment than death. Imagine waking up every morning knowing you have got 16 tons, and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt. Whereas when are you at yourmost relaxed? When you are asleep, and isn't it annoying waking up and having to get out of bed.? Wel I think it is anyway, no give me death any day.[:p] Seriously life is too precious for others to judge when to take it. At least a convicted murderer who is later found to be innocent can be released by the courts. As long of course he hasn't been executed. - Spitfire - 20-Feb-2006 I realize that it`s impossible to quantify, but how many innocent people have been murdered because we DIDN`T have capital punishment? - noel - 20-Feb-2006 quote: Originally posted by Spitfire I realize that it`s impossible to quantify, but how many innocent people have been murdered because we DIDN`T have capital punishment? Could be none. You're right Jim it is impossible. But I should add, life should be life, not paroled after 8 years. It's a flipping disgrace our soft legal system. - David - 20-Feb-2006 I think that DNA should play a major part in proving death penalty cases. Perhaps in future the only time that a death penalty would be sought would be by linking the murder through DNA ? - shuffy - 20-Feb-2006 even DNA can be planted so isn't 100% foolproof - noel - 20-Feb-2006 I used to be very pro capital punishment but heard of so many cases where the police planted evidence, I just don't trust the police, haven't done so for ages. - muffers - 20-Feb-2006 I read the article regarding the women jailed for 17years and I agree it was awful but I am all for the death penalty. So many people are murdered for no apparent reason other than being in the wrong place at the wrong time or some depraved person murdering children. Look at that man in Florida who abducted an 8 year old girl from her bed, kept her alive for 2days raping her and then her buried her alive. If he where given life he would be out in a few years. Life is not considered life with a prison sentence so if killing them is the only way then so be it. Just make sure you have the right person. I know this might seem a little bit off topic but what was Sunny Jacobs doing trudging across country with a tiny baby and a small boy. They could have all been murdered. Not a wise thing to do. |
