We've had that here as well David, the M65 construction was stopped for some time through "tree people" perching in their natural habitats to stop sections of "historic" woods being destroyed.
I'm sceptical about this but with my aversion to motorways and change I'm just a bit sad they didn't win.

On the other side of the argument..... I'm sure I've read that populations of some wild creatures have actually increased since the advent of motorways because the central reservations and embankments have created new habitats. There must be a good population of small rodents alongside motorways - look at the number of kestrels you see hovering when you next travel on the motorway.

And of course there are sections where tunnels have been created under the road to allow the various animals to cross so some consideration given.
When there is a 'speed camera' involved, does the camera measure the speed on BOTH sides of the road, or is it only functional on the side of the road where the camera is located ??

It's only on the side of the camera, though the marks on the road to determine the distance are on both sides in case a speeding car crosses over to try and avoid the camera.

Sorry to split hairs Noel, but it doesn`t matter which side of the road the camera is located. What is important is the fact that the camera will only work when the vehicle is going AWAY from it, unlike the new hand-held ones which calculate your speed as you approach.
Jim
To clarify...the camera only takes photo's of the rear license plate ?
Jim; The camera on Dunkirk Lane, near the Black Bull, only checks the speed of the drivers coming INTO Leyland ?

Yes that's right Jim. I thought it made sense when I wrote it , the camera on the near side of the road will only capture cars on the left hand side going away from it. It will not capture cars coming towards it.

If they were to install speed cameras in this part of the world, they'd be riddled with bullets within ten minutes! The number of road signs that are used for target practice around here would really blow the mind of anyone brought up with the British attitude to firearms.

Frank, The yobbos round here spray them with aerosols, or push them over from behind, bend them over, or turn them round to face the wall.
Installed on unattended roads they are open to abuse, but I did read that the police are now reluctant to even put film in them now.
