I know you have talked about this topic before.

Sharon, not 100% sure on this, but have a feeling I have read somewhere that it was the top of Fox Lane which used to be called Water Street.

Can't quite put my hand on my book about old Leyland at the moment but will try to track it down.

The top end of Fox lane was known as Union Street, before the war, I went to the Infants which was in Fox lane, then up a few yards to the "top school" in Union Street. From the Cross into Leyland was Water Street as far as the even Stars (I think) then it became Towngate as far as the junction with School Lane, then became Hough Lane as far as the Gas Works, then Chapel Brow.

Hope that helps. It was along time back.!!

It was my understanding that from the Cross to somewhere around Westgate was Towngate and from there to the junction with Hough Lane and School Lane was Water Street. Our shop originally had a Water Street address and then became 143 Towngate. Don't know what number it was in Water St.

The name of the road comes from the Houghs Tenement which was on the site of the Gables public house.
