Have been on Gormley's site to look at the other work by the artist -really well worth checking it out. It's an excellent site-I had no idea he had produced so much- with art all over the world.
Pleased at least some of the statues are to remain in situ.

Lovely stuff on the website but I'm still not keen on his Angel of the North.

I was watching a visit by one of the 'Flog It' team the other day to a made- to -order coffin makers which seemed to be doing great trade.
These coffins came in all shapes and designs from Cello cases to Canal barges and Grand Pianos..Barges are very popular evidently .
However I had to chuckle at one which looked rather like The Angel Of The North in shape.

Well there you go Alan, we can't all agree but thankfully most people enjoy the works of art.

You're the second artist I've heard say they don't like the Angel of the North. I've only seen it once, whilst driving up to Newcastle, and seen from the road I found it quite cheering and inspiring - but maybe because it meant I was nearly at my journey's end?

Obviously I don`t know what the artist had in mind, but to me they are far more than just some iron men looking out to sea.

Haven't seen first hand the sculptures but I do find the photographic images very meaningful. They remind me a bit of the Easter Island statues -looking out to far horizons -perhaps for a faint trace of hope.

When I went to see them it was a very cold windy day. I find it hard to describe my feelins as I looked along the length of the beach, seeing them almost like an army garding the beach. Odd. To describe them as rusty iron is an insult.

Incidentally Lynne I'm not sure if you could call them sculptures. I think they are cast having seen the things close up, there are several what I would call plug holes on them where molten metal would be poured through.
