From reports on US news programs, the "big deal" was that it's a mis-interpretation of the Mayan Calendar, and is essentially the Mayan New Year, when their calendar starts over. In our modern world this happens every 365 days (366 in leap years). Mayan "years" last for many thousands of ours.

I guess some conspircay theorist group latched on to the issue and a lot or people fell for it. Made a lot of money for people who sell survivalist stuff. I can't figure out where you're going to go and hide, with your gas masks and emergency rations and all the other stuff if the world is actually going to END.

Some people are too dumb to remain in society!
