Hi Dottymapley My cousins lived down Todd Lane North the Hunts Cyril,Nornam,Harold,Murial and Kathleen, at the bottom of the hill leading down from the station, just past the shop on the lefthand side. The boys went to Hutton Grammar. My uncle Tom Hunt was the Station Master at Todd Lane North Station. The bus number S18 I'd forgot, use to miss it quite often and catch the Fishwick which took the long route via Shady Lane.
Noel you mention St James Church are you a regular attender?

I used to split between St. James and St. Paul's Bob as we live in Farington Moss and the churches are equidistant from our house. If anything I prefer St Paul's now.Incidentally through doing some research into family history I found out my grandparents were married at St Paul's in 1900 on 23rd March so I had them in my thoughts last week.
There were also the S21 and S25 buses I think but can't remember where they went to as I used to bike in from Farington.

Well, Bob, it's a small world! I remember the Hunt family very well, they lived at No. 129, next door to Kathleen Jackson(whom I'm still in touch with, she now lives in Kendal with husband John), and I lived at No. 121, with my parents Arthur and Dinah Browne and grandparents Tom and Emma Snape, though my grandpa died when I was 9 years old.

Noel and dottymapley: Although I now live in Hertfordshire I use St James quite often when we visted my mother. She died earlier this year (age 99) and we had the funeral at the church,of course the Hunts where there.Cyril still lives down Todd Lane just opposite the old family home.A few old Balshavians use St James.Incedently my father replaced the church windows in 1952 the year I took the 11+ in the old Lostock Hall primary school opposite the church,it was on a saturday morning and I walked across from the school at half time to watch him!!I to am doing some family research hence my interest in the school.I have found lots of old school photos while going through my mothers things.

Hi Bob. i , along with Dorothy attended Lostock hall Council school opposite the Church. I was Sandra Pickthall. I visited the old school in 2003 and it has hardlychanged no new addition to the buildings. But i have a feeling it is closed now. We had a wonderfully huge field, i remember. sandy

Hi Sandy: Nice to hear from someone who went to my primary school.I lived in Brownedge road and our orchard backed onto the playing fields. I had a duck which followed me to school sometimes. I was in Miss Tusons class( she eventually married Mr Griffiths the headmaster). They closed the school at this february half term. The school celebrated it's 100th year recently but I missed the reunion. I have a sister in new Zealand in the south island (Milton) also wemt to same primary. She's been in Milton for thirty odd years.I have never visted I donn't like flying.

You're right about the school, Sandy, it did close last year, with everything being transferred to the new building off Linden Drive. Very sad - I'd love to have had as a souvenir that portion of the old railings in the school yard where I got my head stuck in 1954: you could see quite distinctly where one of the rails had been bent to get me out! Incidentally, Bob, my mum (who died in 2008 aged 86) was a great friend of Cyril Hunt's wife Maureen, they belonged to Lostock Hall W.I.

We never got the school photos in my family. There's one on the forum somewhere, I think from 1959.
I started lower 6th at the start of the 1957/58 sschool year, doing Pure Maths, Applied Maths and Physics. Unfortunately, the two maths classes were taught by Mr. Wlikinson, who wasn't the slightest bit interested in teaching boys and couldn't explain things very well. I gave up in April 58 and signed on as a Student Apprentice with (then) English Electric at Warton. The apprenticeship actually ran just over 7 years, but I got a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Salford out of it.
I remember Jim Anderson a bit, and Jim McGaw (not McGall). I was good friends with Bob Swarbrick and Graham Brown, but didn't keep in touch with anyone from our class after Balsahw's. My sister still sees Valerie Roocroft (Metcalfe when we were in school) occasionally.
We don't regret emigrating to the US, though the politics are getting very messy these days. Where we live now (Anacortes) is great. It's a small seaside town, about 16,000 population and is in some of the nicest scenery anywhere in the world. We told a relative who was coming out to see us that the area was "really pretty". After a few days she said we had lied - it wasn't "pretty", but absolutely magnificent. The climate is easy to live withm if you don't mind a fair bit of greay and stodgy in the winter.
Regards,
Frank
Hi
I just noticed here that you mention Jim McGaw, Im his daughter. Just to let you know, my Dad passed away in 1980 of bowel cancer, far too young and far to soon. Left everyone who knew him with many many memories, though!
