Hello, Recently discovered Leyland Forum. My name is David Sumner and I went to Fox Lane primary and junior schools before Leyland Sec Modern from 1955 to 1959. Then onto Leyland Motors from school.
I can recall some teachers names i.e Butterworth (science),Hardy (TD),Jasper Lowe (history),Blackburn (Geography),Hall (music),Mr Farington (dep Head), Mr Church (Head) or ABC as we called him. Also have a few photographs of school. First day at school we were thrown into the "featherbed". I started in form 4 and was in Corinthians house.
Memories include being in the cubs and scouts at the Congs, we used to parade through the town one Sunday a month clicking the drum sticks - I think I can still do it! Lived in Clifton Avenue and well remember Damps garage with the smell of rubber as you went in, the gas works in operation, Chapel Brow CO-OP with its pneumatic system, Hough Lane when the buzzer went at midday and traffic had to stop because of so many workers went from North works to the canteen . Houses on Hough lane that still had gardens. Collecting train numbers on the field at the back of Clifton avenue which still had the circular dug outs from anti-aircraft guns during the war.
Now living in Australia but have just returned from the UK and time around Leyland. A lot has changed. If these memories mean anything you are as old as me. Look forward to chatting some more in the future about all things Leyland. Regards David
