I was panning through the forum whilst stuck for something to do then saw this item that nobody has commented on. Surely there must be something?
There were many tales at L&B of ghosts haunting the buildings. A cleaner who left about 5 years ago had to clean the old 4 storey building behind Fishwicks. She told many a tale of chairs moving and her radio being turned off or retuned, nobody there of course.
My mother once told me after a visit to the old Woolworths that she was walking along between the aisles when a daffodil shot out of a vase right in front of her eyes. I think she had been drinking too much.
Finally one bit of recent history I do know ( though not about ghosts)
The founder of L&B was James Quin in 1862 . Quin St was named after him. ( I always maintained that the South Ribble Gym was too. Gym/Jim, get it? Ah well .

Hi, my father in law worked at L&B and he too told many tales of ghostly sightings around the factory site. I am sure I remember a book being published on the history of leyland that mentioned quite a few haunted places. I know there is a tale of the old Leyland cross being moved to a new site and miraculously reappearing over night back in its original spot!

I've heard of secret tunnels running under some buildings in Leyland, they could just be urban legends, like a lot of storys of old. Glastonbury is full of myths about the past, a lot of it was political though, the abbey was a seat of power before Henry VIII closed it down.

Hi Mossy.. i can relate to your seeing UFO's I actually didn't see one but late one night when I lived in Watkin Lane we heard this high pitched whirring sound.. it was a very cold night so we didn't get out of bed to check it out. but it certainly was not an earthly sound. Anyhow next day there was an article in the Lancashire Evening Post that said this young lass in Frenchwood had got up to feed her baby and had seen this object hovering over the river there.. we looked at maps and found out that the little lostock river near to our house ran around and up to Frenchwood.. we actually confirmed with the young lass taht we had heard this strange noise and it was roughly the same time so I believe your sightings

This is a really interesting topic as not just Leyland but the surrounding area seems to bound up in intrigue.I was told once that all the old manor houses and Halls had secret passages to allow priests to escape being hunted down and meet horrible ends.
This involved passage ways between places like Cuerden Hall, Lostock House,Todd Hall and Woodcock Hall among others.
Certainly Todd Hall which was just down the road from us had secret hiding places and escape routes. While it was derelict at the outbreak of war my husband and his mate Bernard Watson used to explore there.
Many of the priests were caught and dragged off to the tower for torture and more.No wonder ghost stories sprang up.
Love the one about the bleach.
Did anyone ever get scared off with stories about Cloggy Dick.
I never really knew whether this was just a scare tactic or for real.
Some of my family lived in the old Lostock Fold off Lostock Lane which was where Cloggy seemed to hang out.

My friends were having a barbecue I think, about 12 years ago and around 7pm a large object illuminated, hovered above their garden about 300 feet in the air. It was no aeroplane or helicopter. They dashed inside to get a camera but it shot away silently before they could get a photo. That was down School Lane in Farington Moss

Life must go on.
Into each life some rain etc etc etc.
Has anyone seen a boggart?
Or the lost Roman Legion in the area of Penwortham Hill.
Wasn't there also a good story about the Eagle and Child!
Nicolas Owen who built Toad or Todd Hall way back in the 1600's was a clever hide maker and designed hidey holes for Jesuit priests. Those guys had a hard time always on the run.
New Zealand had its moment of fame re UFO's when strange lights were seen off the Kaikoura Coast by an Airline pilot.Has never been explained and claims of the lights being from fishing trawlers were dismissed but the story has been included in UFO stories and fims.
Doreen if you lived in Watkin Lane you may know some of my old school friends from St James.
I used to have to do the shopping at the Co-op in the 40's go before school and have the shopping under my desk until home time. Some of it used to disappear, like chunks of butter and corners of loaves and since the butter ration was so meagre unfortunately it was always noticed. The co-op I think was on the corner near the Pleasant.
Cheers

Good subject! I think the legend about the cross being moved was in fact about he foundation stones for the Parish church being moved in the night a few times . This story also turns up in Rochdale, where it was the Devil who moved the stones, and in Bolton they were shifted by flying pigs! The tales have some connection to the coming of Christianity and its taking over or consecrating pagan sites, not all the locals would be in support...
There's supposed to be a tunnel from the Parish church to the cellars of the Eagle and Child, and I've seen a shadowy ghost-like figure in the pub- it's said to be haunted.
