Leyland Market

THERE is to be a reshuffle at Leyland market in a bid to boost visitor numbers.

A new application submitted to South Ribble Council's planning committee seeks to reduce the number of outdoor stalls around the back of the indoor market building and move them onto the pavement of Northcote Street.

This topic was started a year ago and I was wondering about the market while I was up north at the weekend. I thought that it was housed temporarily until they could find a better site for it. It looks like it's not going to be moved from where it is now, or does anyone know differently?

Don't know Martin, but its not open as much as you'd think for a permanent building. The cafe is open every day but the rest is closed most of the time.
Chorley market isnt as good as it used to be either.

There are only two stalls on Northcote St. and where the stalls used to be round the back is now an extended car park. The market is badly patronised now, apart from the butcher's stall and possibly the cake stall. The card stall used to be very popular but are now facing stiff competition from the Card Warehouse on Hough Lane.

Anyone remember when the market was in Towngate opposite the row of shops which included Thacker's newsagents, Finch's bakery and Miss Wilson's miliner's shop?

The land belonged to Thornley's the pork butchers who had a shop on the corner of Forge St and also owned the row of houses in between.

You could see the backs of the houses in Vevey St and some days a local milkman (well, farmer, I think) would come down the backs in a pony and trap with a milk kit on the back and housewives would emerge from their back yards with jugs to be filled with milk.

A far cry from plastic containers in Tesco!

The demise of the outdoor market is widespread I`m afraid, although the return of several farmers markets is to be welcomed.

Remember market days in Preston when even the smaller 'fish' market was packed with stalls.

Today you can buy second-hand books there, but is there any fish to be had?

Sad to see the demise of Leyland Market, I remember it well, and the shops opposite I believe there was a butchers shop there called White`s or something like that. We used to be registered there for the meat ration during the war. Happily, the markets complex in Barnsley is a thriving business, so all is not lost, hope it never goes like Leyland Market. I've recieved an email asking for details of somebody who works at the market.

I am a fellow market trader trying to trace Bonnie who I believe is in the new market hall in Leyland. She sells haberdashery and makes bridal dresses. We used to stand side by side on Ormskirk market. I am in need of bridesmaid dresses. Steve

If anyone knows who this is and can pass on the message, I have the contact details for Steve.
