When the US had its last increase in postal rates, (from 35 cents to 37) a local comedian reckoned it was due to the increased costs of storage.
Really, nationwide service by air for 37 cents (about 22p at current exchange rates) is a pretty good deal, even if it's not particularly quick.
When we first emigrated (1968) we could write my mother on Sunday afternoon, take the lettergram to Seattle-Tacoma airport, and get a reply by Friday.
