I have never been a smoker either, but I am very much affected by smoke. If I stay in a smoky atmosphere too long I get blood shot eyes and a cough. So it's not just the converts up in arms!
Re Noel's comments about the firemen not turning their hoses on attackers - I'd be all for that too. Things have gone too far the other way. In my childhood the local bobby would give misbehaving lads a clip round the ear and that's all it would take. If I was a fireman under attack, I'd be sorely tempted to ooops, accidentally discharge the hose in the direction of the oiks concerned! [}
