I started at the old pile in 1952 and there was woodwork then. The classes were held in a specially equipped room on the east (Bent Bridge) side of the school, south of the dining hall. It was a boys-only class, and was equivalent to Domestic Science for girls. I think the woodwork shop was underneath the Domestic Science room. If I remember, you made the choice before starting 3rd form whether to take Music, Art or Woodwork.
I remember the nickname "Scrat Harry" but didn't know its origins, and I think the last name was either Higginson or Hewitson. I think he died of cancer.
