US Space Shuttle Program
#1
For those of you interested and who have PowerPoint, Rocketman sent out a package of Shuttle photos to a small number of Leyland Forum members the other day. It's way too big to put on the Forum, but I'm sure John will forward it to anyone who's interested.

Forgive my assumption, John, but it's a spectacular set of photos. If I wouldn't be breaching NASA compyright, I'd be happy to act as forwader so you don't have to bother.

My mistake, an ex colleague at Lockheed sent it to me. I'm having problems sending it to people without the full E-Mail address. If anyone wants it I'll need the full address, sorry my computer ignorance lets me down again.

A good friend and colleague of mine, Dave Cooper from Guildford, was the senior engineer responsible for development and procedures for the application of TPS [thermal protection system-foam] on the Space Shuttle External Tank. When the Space Shuttle exploded on re-entry it was a piece of foam that got the blame, I for one will never believe that. Dave fealt it was his fault and took the disaster as a personal failure, last weekend Dave took his own life, he could live with the guilt no longer, he was'nt the first but I hope the last.

John, I'm saddened to read about Dave, it's particularly distressing when one knows that every conceivable consideration would have been given prior to the trajic event, yet wherever mankind attempts to enlarge his domain, accidents occurr . I'm wondering how this tragedy has effected you and other collegues also what can you tell us about Dave's family .

John:

I'm devastated that someone could consider himself so culpable as to take his own life. I worked in the NASA system for three years, and my take on it is that every decision is a committee decision, so that no single individual could be blamed or have to take the blame.

As I recall, the original design of the Shuttle didn't have external tanks. They were added because the design that was originally funded couldn't do the job witout busting the budget. The external tanks were a kluge to keep the program within budget.

My sympathies go out to Dave's friends and family.

Frank, I join you in your Condolences, good qualified engineers are a disappearing breed. Perhaps one day the truth will be known which caused him to take this course.

May he rest in Peace,

W.R.H. (An Engineer)
