I have an 8 megabit connection but it only runs at between 0.5 and 1 megabit because I'm miles away from the exchange. My mobile phone/pda has a 1.8 megabit connection, far faster than the house.

My pal in Heskin has similar problems David, I wondered why, that must be the reason.

Speed decreases with distance from the Exchange, some of my neighbours can have broadband, others can't and they are only 1 house or 30 feet apart. It's just that we are on the distance limit here, the signal to noise ratio is very high and not capable of sustaining high speed, or in many cases any, broadband.

Is a satellite connection not an option for you David?
Noel, As you are on the same ISP as me, I wondered what your speed was.

My 2MB connection runs at 2MB down and 0.2MB up, whatever that means, also says 2019.58KBps.
The server is just outside my drive I think, well it's a box that Telewest run the lines from.

It's the distance to the Exchange that you have to count, that box outside your house probably goes to a telewest 'Exchange' so you are probably not far from that.
You mentioned 2MB connection it's not a 2MB connection but a 2Mb connection. The difference is an upper or lower case 'b' to indicate bits or bytes. All speeds are in Megabits or Mb. Your O.2Mb up connection means that you send stuff to the internet at 0.2 Mb but receive things back at 2Mb.

How can you tell how near you are to the exchange? I've just recently gone onto Sky broadband but I've no idea where the exchange is.

Kath, I`m only guessing here but I would have thought exchange distance wouldn`t apply to satellite reception. Same with cable as they use fibre optics as opposed to the copper telephone cable which IS dependant upon distance.

The main thing that matters Katrina is the speed. If you do the test and it shows your 8Mb connection or whetever is running at that speed, it doesn't matter how far away you are. My pal in Heskin ( in an earlier reply)is obviously a long way from an exchange, his BT 8MB runs just over 1Mb
