This is a website which gives you alternative numbers to ring instead of the premium rate numbers such as 0870.

I haven't tried it personally yet, but people who have swear by it.

I have used it a lot and it has been quite handy at times, I've only needed it every few months but I always check it before going to phone an 0870 number.

I didn't realise 0870 numbers were premium lines, are they similar prices to the 090 numbers?

Noel, They are indeed far more expensive and are increasingly being used by more and more large companies and their call centres.
