You might have to shut down and restrart for the change to take effect.

I'd like to find out how to get the pound sign by key strokes, as I don't want to change my US English default. In MSWord, I can use the "Insert Symbol" menu, but I can't find that capability on the Forum. As I remember, there's "CTRL_ALT_something" that will give you the pound sign, even here on the forum when you're overseas.

As Frank says you may have to do the change then restart for it to take effect, this not always the case, but usually the OS will advise if a shutdown is required.

Frank ...

To get a Pound Sign on most keyboards you need to enter the Unicode value of the Character ie.

Hold the ALT Key down and then enter 0163 on the numeric keypad, when you lift your finger off the ALT Key the £ character should appear. If you are using a Laptop you may need to hold down the ALT and Fn(Function Key) together and then use the numeric 0163 contained in the squares on the relative keys usually the keys are Fn + M[0] J[1] K[2] L[3] U[4] I[5] O[6] &/7[7] *8[8] (9[9] (Sometimes you may need to have the Number Lock ON)

Hope this Helps ...

Interesting - and it works. It's funny that you have to use the numeric keypad. It doesn't work if you use the row of number keys above the letters.

Thanks, MjO

Frank, if you want the euro sign press ctrl alt and e. It works in word, not sure about other programs.

For the Euro sign € in two key presses, hold down your ALT GR and press the '4' key.

The reason you cannot use the keyboard standard inline numeric characters is because they map to different keyboard values. Inline numeric keys 0-9 map to 48-57 Dec ASCII, and on the keypad 0-9 maps to 96-105 Dec ASCII, and with the addition of the ALT key allow you to enter the Unicode Values directly. You can enter any character by this method if you know the Unicode Value for it. For example, for Dollar it would be: ALT036 and for Cent: ALT0162 and the Copyright Symbol ALT0169.

Hope that this clears up any mystery for you ...
