Leyland Band FREE Concert
#1
WHERE THERE’S MUCK...

Brass band open doors to public ahead of its title challenge

A local brass band is set to represent the North West of England at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 20 October. After qualifying at the North West Championships in Blackpool back in March, the Leyland Band is now busy rehearsing for the prestigious event which attracts thousands of music lovers from across the world to London each year.

The band’s conductor Russell Gray enthused, ‘Leyland Band is thrilled to be representing the town of Leyland and the North West region at the event. We want to let the people of Leyland hear the band in action before heading to London, so we are holding a free concert and open rehearsal at St Mary’s Church in Leyland on Thursday 18 October. We will play a short concert for everyone before working on and performing Music for Battle Creek – the piece of music that we must play in the Royal Albert Hall only a few days after.’

Gray continued: ‘It’s really important for the band to have the support of the local community behind us. We are incredibly grateful of the support we receive already, but the players are determined to give something back to the community and wanted to hold this free event to let people see how great their local band really is!’

Gray – who played principal cornet when the band was known as the Leyland DAF and BNFL band – is optimistic about the band’s chances this year.

‘The band won the event in 2005 and we have been working hard over the last year, making substantial improvement and attracting some new high profile players. The band achieves a amazingly high standard of performance, despite only having ‘amateur’ status and having many young members in the ranks.’

The band’s youngest player, Matthew White, is only 16 years old, yet he still managed to reach the final of the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Musician of the Year competition this year. Matthew – who hails from Westhoughton – follows in the footsteps of fellow young players Katrina Marzella (23) and Brenden Wheeler (22) who both won the prestigious title in 2004 and 2005 respectively.

Gray enthused, ‘With young and enthusiastic talent like this, the band has high hopes for the contest. We hope we can do the town proud once again.’

See the Leyland Band prepare for its title challenge at St Mary’s Church, Broadfield Walk, Leyland PR25 1PD at 7.30pm on Thursday 18 October. Free entry for all.

I will try and get there, love the music. My son tried to join Lostock Hall band many years ago but they were far too good and fast for him.

My 'bessie' Stella has been attending
the band's perfomances at St. Mary's for
some time now and says that they are
wonderful.[Big Grin]
Unfortunately my visits have
never been at the right time so I haven't
been able to hear them.
I think everyone that attends is going to
really enjoy this free treat.

Good Luck to the Leyland (formerly Leyland Motors) Band. Eileen and I have fond memories of walking past the Thurston Road Cafeteria building and hearing the band at practice. The opening sequence of the Hettie Wainthropp TV program revives those memories. We subscribe to Netflix, and have been able to rent the entire series. Unfortunately, though they identify the cornet solo player, there's no mention of who the backing band is.

I also remember a fellow student at Fox Lane Junior School (Alan Fowler) joining the band when he was about 10. It was certainly before I went to Balshaw's at the end of 3rd form at Fox Lane. I think he played cornet.

I have the double LP of the Motors band in Japan and plan to convert it to DVD this winter (one of those "if I can get to it projects!).

All our children and most of our grandchildren have been heavily involved with the band program in their school district. The band director, who had all our kids go through the program, was overjoyed to get his first "grandstudent", our eldest granddaughter, into the program.

The band (Inglemoor High School, Bothell, WA) has been invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. Are they ever hyped up! Don't know how the invitation came their way. Oldest grand-daughter will be part of the tour group.

We'll be watching the TV coverage with more that a typical sports enthusiast interest. We just hope TV coverage gives the various bands enough air time.

I am hoping to get to the concert as well, as I also have fond memories of the Leyland motors band from childhood Leyland motors sports days. Then when I worked on the switchboard at North works I did the late shift on a Wednesday but sometimes swapped to the night the band practised and if the wind was in the right direction I could hear them practising. I also sang with the motors choir and at Christmas we got togther with the band for the concert. Yes Frank, Alan Fowler did play the cornet, I was at school with his sister Brenda. They lived on Towngate didn't they? Congratulations to your granddaughters band lets hope we get to see and hear them on the telly coverage.
