Hello, hello, calling Leyland, are you there ?
#1
Really, what a dead beat crowd Leyland has for citizens, and ex-citizens. I've just done a quick survey on the percentage of posts compared to the readers of the topics. I used the Leyland Talk forum...Eating out in Leyland....(177 posts, 2123 readers .045% response), ROF....(22 posts, 241 readers, .083% response), Leyland Pubs....(3 posts, 55 readers, .054% response) A less than 1% response record for these three current threads. It's appaling, are Leyland folk afraid to give opinions or what ?[Sad][V][}Smile][|)]

There`s an old saying in Yorkshire, "If tha`s nowt useful to say, shurrup" or one from St. Helen`s area, "Good fault finders should be good fault menders". The watcher sees most of the game.William R.

I'd noticed this an'all, David . I came to the conclusion that a lot of people find writing difficult, yet still like to read a lot. Self expression has always been neglected, even discouraged in the education system . There's also been too much emphasis on spelling correctly, and this puts folk off setting anything down . One example being my daughter! I'm sure there are a lot of people out there with valid things to add- such a shame .......

And I have to say David I'm puzzled by your mathematics."....(177 posts, 2123 readers .045% response), " ???? 177/2123 is just over 8%.
Are you a politician by any chance fudging the figures?[Smile]

I think the true reading figures are probably a little higher than we think. If I'm right, the 'number of times read' figure could include re visits to the forum.

I do take your point David and have been thinking of ways to get more people posting on here. Do you think we should create a scandal and get into the newspapers? Or maybe advertise in some of the Leyland papers?

I'll get my thinking cap on.

Aye, and yet gobby folk living in Wigan wi' nowt to do wi' Leyland (other than knowing the webmaster) are allus postin' on 'ere [Wink]

I reckon some people read, but are shy of posting because they worry that either their views or their standards of spelling etc. will be jumped on and criticised. Well, we did have one argument on here with a guy who seemed to think football violence was an OK activity, but otherwise I think we've been a friendly bunch, so c'mon, folks, get posting!! [Smile]

Just been reading Caroline`s posting about people being "backward at coming forward" on the forum because they cannot express themselves correctly.I quickly learned at Harris Institute during the war that recording information written on the blackboard before the end of class, required some kind of speed writing, long before the advent of tape recorders. Being at school in the age when it was considered that legible writing was essential for later life, I had to throw previous learning away, just to keep up. Having studied and "got there" I was able to recall penmanship, and now in my old age I`m constantly being called upon for Copperplate productions for Table Cards and Invitations for weddings etc. and Certificates. My best was for some Certificates for recipients of Queens Scouts Awards. I don`t really know the answer to the problem, I`ve talked it over with Martin, and reach the same conclusion that inactive members all deserve their place on the Forum. When the time is right, they will make their presence known, until then we`ll keep posting. From over the Pennines, Cheerio, Bill.

Not sure that the reluctance to post opinions and join in is altogether to do with a feeling of being unable express oneself or fear of criticism but perhaps a recognition of the power of the Web itself. The Eyes and Ears of The World as it were.
I do relate to the conditioning of those of us brought up in an era of Only speak when you are spoken to and Don't Say anything until you have something worth saying.Writing down your thoughts is even more of an obstacle and can't be retrieved.
It's the silent majority all over again and I do think both those who take part and those who observe have a place.
I do sometimes wonder what my great great granchildren will think should they ever discover my rambles while browsing.
Give us a topic,David, and we'll issue a challenge to those who watch.

Noel; You are quite correct with your figures. I have no idea where that figure of .045 came from, and, the % mark should have been deleted ;-)Martin; Perhaps a spell checker would help some folks, although MOST posters nowadays accept the fact that the message is what is important, not the spelling, or the grammar. I just think it's a crying shame that Martin, and others, are providing a small town like Leyland with such a good service, then have such a poor response.....unless you're talking about Fish and Chips !!
