Manor house behind Stannings Bleach works?
#1
Does anyone know the history of the large manor house behind Stannings bleach works? it was off Cow lane or Broadfield Drive, I remember it was fenced off but as children we would get through the fence and play in there, there was a boating lake complete with swans and boat house, also some beautiful stables and derelict cottages, Who owned it ? and what happened to it?

Sandieh,
It was 'Broadfield' and belonged to Stannings. There were actually three boating lakes originally and several man made streams for growing watercress. My mother was a frequent visitor as a child because her grandfather was works manager at Stannings. I have many old photos if you are interested, I can E-Mail them to you. Leyland Historical Society has some as well, they have an excellent web site, try it. I also played there as a child when it was boarded up, that was in the early '50's' before the house was demolished. Many is the time I fled on hearing 'Oi, get the bloody 'ell outa there'.

I'm not sure, but I think it bacame a geriatric nursing facility. Certainly, my maternal grandmother spent the last three or four years in a facility that was down a short lane off to the west of Broadfield Drive, just at the point where the council estate started. I think that was the old Stanning manor house.

The last I remember of the posh pool, it was a fishing area. We used to play up there as kids and build grass dams where the water used to flow out of the square pools at the back. I think there are still swans in that area, you can see them near the back of St Marys church.
