Gritters needed
#1
What use are the council when they cant even grit the side roads, pavements and car parks around Hough lane during this present cold snap?Yesterday was a nightmare for pedestrians, especially old folk, many of whom would have been deterred from shopping along Hough lane or using the market at a time when local business' are struggling. The forecast is for snow tonight and thursday morning but will we see any gritters out in force?

Seems to be a wider problem than just Leyland, Sammy. The roads were not gritted where I live on the outskirts of Wigan on Saturday, when we had freezing fog,and didn't seem to have been gritted this morning. However, complaints must have been made, I think - we got back from daughter's parents evening to find our road had been gritted tonight (and being a side road, it isn't usually done). I was glad of it as I skidded twice doing less than 5 miles an hour and so did hubby when he left this morning and returned from work tonight. (Sometimes there are drawbacks to living on a hill!)

A few years ago, I was working for Boeing at Gatwick Airport. There was quite a heavy snowfall. Of the two adjacent boroughs, Crawley and Horley, all the major streets were cleared in Crawley quite quickly, but Horley took forever.

One of the locals commented that "the only thing Horley gritted was it teeth".

BTW, our overnight lows are running around 40F at the moment!

We attended a Christmas dinner at Leyland golf club on Tuesday evening, where conditions were so treacherous outside that staff, at the end of the evening, were compelled to warn each driver in turn. The car park proved to be like the proverbial ice rink.
