Man's business ruined by young thugs
Lancashire Evening Post - 16th December 2008

A gang of four children aged between 11 and 13 spent an entire weekend wrecking a Lancashire business, causing £37,000 worth of damage.

The young thugs wrote off businessman Robert Cairns' work vans and forced him out of his premises.

They also destroyed his personal possessions, his children's toys and photographs of his war hero father.

Then they plundered family heirlooms being stored as his mother lay seriously ill in hospital. She died before her son had to break the devastating news to her about what had happened.

The father-of-three built up his Car Fix vehicle painting and repair business over eight years and had been based at the largely derelict Club Street Mill in Bamber Bridge for the last four years.

What gets me is what on earth were these lads parents thinking? (Or not thinking, more to the point!) There is no way a lad can spend a full day throwing paint around and using a grinder and not come home filthy. If it was my lad I wouldn't rest till I'd found out exactly where he'd been and what he'd been doing. And if I found out he'd been behaving in such a criminal way, well, he'd have more to fear from me than the courts! It sounds like the parents in this case couldn't give a toss, even now their lads have appeared in court.

It's a sad indictment of what's happening to the country. The fine is a joke, £350 for wrecking his livelyhood, a disgrace.

Certainly nothing will change until the rabble are made to pay for their acts and there's little chance of that in Lancashire !

I hesitate to comment here in case I`m accused of `bringing back hanging`. Unfortunately, in my opinion, when it was abolished we were set onto very slippery slope (the bottom of which is still not in sight).

Punishment seldom fits the crime these days. If a criminal knew that if he was caught doing `that`, and as a result he was guaranteed `this`, then things WOULD begin to change.

OK so the jails are full - SO BUILD SOME MORE. We could have had more than enough if we`d used a fraction of the money wasted in Iraq.

For the bleeding hearts who say that jail doesn`t work, just let it be known that re-offenders will be awarded DOUBLE their previous sentence and NO appeal. If that doesn`t sink in - then double it again!!

So long as the criminal knows it`s only going to be a warning or 25 minutes of community work for a robbery, then NOTHING will change.

Whether you agree with me or not, the softly, softly approach has NOT worked and I challenge anybody to say otherwise.

What strikes me is that there seems to be a disparity in the punishment for various crimes. This article was in the paper recently http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/jun/13/shoplifting-women and the statistic which struck me was that 1 in 3 female prison inmates is in for shoplifting. Now I'm not saying prison for shopliting is wrong - theft deserves punishment - but studies show that women are far more likely than men to receive a custodial sentence for shoplifting than men. If there's a punishment, it should be equally meted out - no sex discrimination.

But my second point is that some people are sent to prison for nicking a few items from a major store, while other people carry out far more serious crimes and get let off with fines or community service or probation. There needs to be punishment commensurate with the level of the crime.

Linda, I agree with everything you have said. As I stated earlier, punishments should be set in stone. If you do THIS then you get THAT, with NO exceptions and no discrimination between sex or colour.

The criminal element are the same as children - where strong ground rules need to be laid down and the consequences of failing to adhere to them made very plain. At present they appear to have nothing to fear in the way of punishment.

At present, far too many people are allowed to stick two fingers up the law, with (unfortunately) impunity.
