[:p]I remember the "Rag and Bone man" I was very young at the time but I think we found old clothes and rags took them out to his cart and he gaves us ? some kind of pot thing, maybe it was supposed to be Bone China, hence bone man? now this is a very early memory so I`m not sure about it.
Also who remembers the Gypsies selling paper flowers? the betterware man usually a Siek (ups I cant have spelt that right!) wearing a turban, he would give us kids tiny tins of furniture polish.
My Dad once took me down Leyland and on the way back, we saw a man outside the GPO, he was playing I think it was it a barrel organ? the man had a monkey on his shoulder and had a wooden stump for a leg, I think he`d lost his leg in the war.

When I was little I used to think he was the "Rainbow Man" as that was what his cry sounded like to me!

Anyone ever try an old wartime gasmask on? I dont remember the war, but remember we had gasmasks hung up in a shed outside, my brother persuaded me to let him put one on me, it was awful, and we could`nt get it off, can you image the funny screams coming from it, until our mother came to the rescue I must have been about 4 at the time, and I think they were all collected later.

We took our gas masks to school .... mine had a tongue .. I think it was supposed to be Mickey Mouse!!!!

We posh folk up Bent Bridge way had to go to Balshaw`s Grammar to be fitted with gas masks at the beggining of the war. Everyone had a gas mask case which soon became useful to carry your dinner or sandwiches to work in. The valve on the front was like a little noes and bl;urted when you breathed out. I wonder what happened to all those thousands of gas masks which were issued. I remember a year later we had to go back to have another filter taped on the end, because they had discovered a new type of gas which coulb be used.I felt soory for the babies who had to lie down inside their gas mask, while mother worked the pump. Nobody has mentioned stirrup pumps yet, but that`s another tale waiting to be told. Cheers William R.
