Does anyone remember Hunters chippy in Golden Hill opposite Northgate, I think it was Annie hunter and her husband with their son who was what they called a "Blue Baby" had the business, I was very young but remember well the excellent fish and chips my mother nee Doris Nixon used to get for my grandfather James Edward Nixon of 12 westwood road and I during the war. Ah the memories and delicious smells. Also Jack Tongs the barbers, in the same block of shops, the fastest barber in the west.

It was still there in the 60s and 70s - not sure who owned it then, but they were a couple about thityish. A lady we knew as 'Aunty Betty' who was a scout leader at St. Ambrose worked there.

During the early 70s a tall guy from Longton had that chippy, it was known then as 'Peter's'. Remembering Tong's barbers shop brought a smile, all his clients came out of the shop with the same haircut. Brings back fond memories of having a fringe :-$

It was said that he did 37 haircuts in 30mins one dinnertime with motors men waiting to get back to work. I agree, it was a basin job.

The story was that if you were going to catch a train with your mates, you could go in, have a haircut and catch them up before they reached the station.

I remember the other Chipshop on that block ...
Lydia's ... fat smelled and tasted like whale oil
(was an acquired taste!!!)
and if Lydia didn't like your face she would refuse
to serve you and ordered you out of her cafe.
She opened and closed whenever she wanted and so was
quite often open when others were closed and visa versa.
Lydia liked our gang and we liked her!
