Muammar Gaddafi killed in Libya

Libya's ex-leader Col Muammar Gaddafi has been killed after an assault on his birthplace of Sirte, officials say.

The circumstances of his death are not yet clear. Video has emerged purporting to show Col Gaddafi being captured alive and bundled on to a truck.

Fighters loyal to the National Transitional Council (NTC) said they found him hiding in a hole, and shot him when he tried to escape.

Col Gaddafi was toppled in August after 42 years in power.

The BBC spell it as Gaddafi. I don't find any pleasure in seeing people killed. Evil sod though he was.

By the way, you missed the full stop off Col[Smile]

Any non-Arabic representation of the langauge is an attempt to duplicate the sound when it's spoken in Arabic. I was a bit surprised, when in Bahrain on business, to find some really peculiar spellings on street signs in one area of town.

I mentioned it to one of the ex-pat Brits who said "Can you pronounce things in German?" When I said yes, he said "try it on thos funny spellings". They came out sounding Arabic. It turned out that there had been a very strong ex-pat German community in the area and their attempt to get the sounds of Arabic had obviously been done in German.

I've seen at least a dozen different spellings of "Qadaffi" and none of them reproduce the odd gargling sound that Arabic speakers use when they speak it or similar words.
