Worden Park
#1
Am I right in believing that Worden Park has just been given an award.I think I read it in the Evening Post last week?
I remember my mum and dad taking us all at the week-ends and spending most of the day there.Went back about 2 months ago.The trains are still giving rides for the kids, the gardens are well kept, the maze was being re-grown(if that is what you do with old ones with holes in!!) the craft shops were open(but Ive never seen the infomation shop open.)The play area was swarming with young families and nearly all the football pitches were being used.I know my two children think it's the best park they've ever been to and I can only agree.

I remember many years ago, sliding on the frozen lake/pond when there was a cold spell, about 1940/41, or maybe earlier. When we were in the Home Guard we used to go on "maneouvres" (???) in the park. We actually had some rifle "butts" where we fired live rounds at targets set in the banking, down by the entrance Lodge.Someone else must remember these things. William R.

I agree Kevin, Worden Park is really great. My wife and I always pay two or three visits every time we come home. You did'nt mention the cafe, which does excellent tea, coffee, and fresh cakes, all very reasonably priced. It was hot last June and the gardens were in full bloom and well cared for, we walked down the path to the 'bridge'[folly?] over the brook, there used to be a hilly area where I used to take the kids sledging in winter time, it's all been planted with trees now.

I haven't seen anything about it getting an award. I wonder what it might be.

You should get another star after your next 400 posts Bill!

I think Worden Park should get an award, It's one of the best parks I have seen in this country.

Maybe we should start handing out LTI awards [Wink]

Worden Park in Lancashire was particularly commended for its special services for dogs - the park has installed ‘dog showers’ where you can clean off your pooch before heading home.

Worden Park was awarded a Green flag award, and not for the first time as it turns out. This is an enviromental award which is assessed on various criteria-health,safety,if it's a clean park, well maintained, on conservation etc.I'm glad to see that the council sees this as a great public service, with a great heritage. John,I did forget to mention the cafe. The last time I visited there was frog legs on the menu! not a great Lancashire dish, but shows their versatility.
Just as a side note, does anyone remember when you entered Worden fron Royal Avenue you entered "Bluebell wood" which in spring was just a carpet of,yes you guessed- bluebells.

There is a folly at Worden and there also is a "cold store" which is at the bottom of the houses garden. It is a small mound with a door below the original ground level. This was used to store food just as you would use your fridge today.
If it snows this Christmas, visit Worden and enjoy it covered in snow,it's unbeatable down near Swiss cottage, at the far end of the park.Take your sled with you!!
