The mosquito is the state bird of Louisiana, after all these years of being bitten my immunity has reduced the effect to less than a midge bite. They're also attracted to ammonia and will settle inside the toilet bowl, it's most unpleasant to find out the hard way. I'm not immune to that.

When we lived in the Tidewater area of Virginia, we thought the mossies were unmanageable. Story is that a VA mosquito arrived at Langley AFB and they pumped 250 gallons of jet fuel into it before they realized what it was!

We reckoned you could hear them lowering gear and flaps before they landed on you for a drilling operation.

A bigger problem was the sub-species known as "no-seeums". They are very small insects, hence the name. They used to congregate outside home front doors in multiple squadron strength and attack anyone who ventured outside. One evening, our eldest daughter got over 100 bites in about five minutes.

One of the things we enjoy about NW Washington is the relative absence of things that bite!

Gozo, too, usually has a mosquito problem, but very few this year. Maybe the entire Med has a reduced mozzie population this summer, Noel? My husband was bitten twice our first night, but none of us were bitten again our entire two weeks. We only used our anti-mozzie spray once, but I did light a citronella candle or two if we ate outside of an evening. The worst bites I've had this year came from something in our garden. I mowed the lawn wearing shorts one evening and later found I had two very itchy and swollen bites on one leg. I've still got the marks three weeks on. Maybe with the warm summer and the enticement of a water park just 2 minutes walk down our road, the mozzies have invaded my neighbourhood?

We get 'No-seeums' in the spring and they really are a menace. The best defence is [believe it or not] Avon 'Skin so Soft'[I think thats the name] which works well. Strangers must think it's awfully odd to smell the perfume on men as well as women. Maybe you folks in England should try it.

It's 'Love Bug' season here at the moment, they always fly in pairs, if you know what I mean, they don't bite but make an awful mess of the car, the windscreen gets covered every day and needs washing, as does the radiator, or it gets clogged. All sorts of things get in the pool this time of year, in the last couple of weeks I've fished out baby ducks, baby turtles [about 2" dia.], snakes, frogs, lizards and mice.
A few weeks ago my old cat, Vienna, fell in whilst trying to catch a mouse, ever seen a cat walk on water?

Hey, RMJ, you should have a fence around the pool with a fine mesh net for the lower couple of feet! The only critters I find from time to time are pack rats that squeeze between the gatepost and the gate and the very occasional small snake. Of course, living in the desert where insects are virtually inexistent is a great advantage.
Now if you were in Florida, you would have to cover the entire pool with a fine mesh net; it's like swimming in a circus tent!
