As the local vernacular has it, winter hit us up side the head with a 2 x 4 yesterday. We had been sailing along quite happily with daytime highs around 45F and overnight lows about 38F. Suddenly, we're looking at 4" of powder snow, highs about 25 F and lows around 12! On top of that, we've got winds from the north at about 50 knots, which gives us a wind-chill way below zero F.
It all comes with beautiful clear conditions, visibility exceeding 100 miles, no inversions or smog, but it's sure difficult taking the dogs for their twice daily walks. Even breathing without a face mask is tough. I can't conceive living in Alaska or the Great Lakes area where sub-zero (fahrenheit) temps are normal for quite a while. According to the forecast, the usual northwest Washington weather (45 deg F with rain!)is due to return about Wednesday.
I'll post some pictures shortly.

I look forward to seeing the photos Frank. We had a smattering of snow a few nights ago that had gone by morning, the temperature is now a wacky 6 Celsius.
Stay cool :-)

The forecast mid afternoon Jan4 ( yesterday) was calling for snow, so I rushed out took off the car's summer wheels replacing them with winter wheels (snowtires), and sure enough we had 5 inches of snow overnight !
The snowblower quickly removed it from the driveway !

When you compare Louisiana with Washington, it's easy to understand the "snowbird" mentality. Many people spend April though October here in Western Washington, then head for the Gulf states (Louisiana, Florida) or the desert (Eastern California, New Mexico) the rest of the year.
I would guess that about a third of the houses in our neighborhood are unoccupied in the winter.
Must be nice to be able to afford two houses and leave one of then empty half the year!

Rocketman, the 95 sounds too hot for me and I don't fancy the 100% humidity either. Many people including my wife say that they like having four definite seasons, maybe they are right, and maybe they are finding an excuse to endure winter ! I'd settle for the Yacatan, South America, the caribbean, or possibly an old favourite , Knott End !
Another alternative, hibernation !

Frank, The weather in Leyland at the moment is anything but `seasonal`. It must be said however that this has been the case in a few recent years. I am certain that `global warming` is the cause. Why can people not just accept a normal cycle, just because we happen to be living in the middle of it? The climate change will be gradual and none of us need fear living in an ice age or for that matter, finding Leyland on the equator.
