US news problems with homonyms and mistakes
#1
We subscribe to MSN as our ISP. They have a home page with news snippets. Sometimes I wonder which planet their headline writers originally inhabited. Often the body of the story gets ir right.

The first headline today was "Venus triuphs in epic Wimbly final". I guess the writer was confused between Wembly and Wimbledon (not to mention which sports are played at each venue)

The second one concerned Indy race driver Danica Patrick. Three times the piece said she had claimed the "poll" position in the next race in which she will compete.

In a local paper, we had a pilot who had a "rye" smile (maybe he was talking with a mouth full of sandwich).

Are the copy editors asleep?

Do you remember when you use to take all that the news agencies said as gospel. No more I find you have to search through many different news media's to find the truth. A very sad state of affairs when you cannot trust what you read but have to consider who is writing it. Sad today as my brother in the Uk died today. He was only 68

Thankyou both. Its very strange but when you live away from home the people you leave behind never seem to age in your memory so when something happens to them it is a big shock. You think of them as they were. He and I were laughing last week he was telling me how he got into big trouble at the Senior School as he played football for them and he was suppose to have reported that I had been taken to hospital with Scarlet Fever and he didnt as he wanted to play so badly.
