We are hearing more and more of these stories about insurance companies worming their way out paying up when someone has problems. They advertise about how easy it is to take out the insurance, sometimes over the phone without having to take a medical but they don't highlight what can happen when a claim is made. The insurance companies should be made to pay if they accept a policy.

What a sad story. Had the roles been reversed, then an American citizen falling ill in this country wouldn`t have been turned away by the NHS (despite all it`s detractors) because of their inability to foot the bill. How on earth do the poor people who can`t afford medical insurance cope over there?

Hospitals have a legal obligation to treat and stabilize everyone, insurance or not. That is the law. They must then transport the patient to a state run facility free of charge [if the patient can't afford the ambulance]. Any number of lawyers will be chomping at the bit to handle this one and a massive law suit will be filed.
The way I read it though is that the wife is'nt blaming the hospital, more the insurance company and the British Embassy.
My own visit cost my insurance company $57,000 for my surgery and 3 days care, which is ridiculous.

What an awful story. This is very bad publicity for Marks and Spencer's. I'm surprised the British press hasn't already uncovered this story and run with it. If the UK media got hold of it, they could probably shame M&S into coughing up.
