Today is a very sad day. We had to take our wonderful loving dog Ziggy to the vets to have him put to sleep. He had cancer and the treatment was not working and he was losing his zest for life but it was hard to have to take him. I was hoping he would fall asleep and not wake up but that was not to be. The vet was wonderful he gave him an injection to mellow him out and then we have five minutes with our loving dog (at this time I fed him his favourite, a bar of chocolate). Then the vet came back in and put him to sleep. He was licking my hand when he went. I keep telling myself no more dogs!!!

My daughter worked at the animal shelter here in New Hampshire. A woman brought Ziggy in and said she no longer wanted him as she didnt think he got along with her young children. He was 6years old. My daughter fell in love with Ziggy and tried to get him adopted but he was not the best looking dog and he was nervous. He was due to be put down so my daughter asked could she bring him home for a few days and find him a home while he stayed with us. Needless to say we fell in love with him and decided to keep him. We had to build a fence around our property because he kept walking off. He use to talk in a low growl and lately when he was hungry he would sit by his dish a whine and growl. He loved my husband and would sit on his knee even though he was 70lbs. He loved chocolate and oranges. I cannot imagine losing two in one week that must have been awful Audrey. A few years ago my husband had a needlepoint painted for me of our other three dogs so during the past year I added the two latest to it. Ziggy and Sam. Each one is a special memory. We have Zoey and Sam left.

They are all special. It's funny the habits you get into with them. I use to always keep my crusts for Ziggy and he would sit underneath the table waiting. This morning I put them to one side and suddenly remembered he was not there.
We had three dogs at one time, Rupert, a German Shepard (Alsation), Sparky, the friendlist pit bull on the planet, and Polly, a 14 inch tall bundle of fluff. All three now in doggy heaven, but the memories are priceless. We vowed no more after Polly at age 16 had to be put to sleep, she was the last of the three to go and that was three years ago.

I am so sorry about your dog i know how you must be feeling, we lost ours last year, she was 14yrs old. one second she was running round the chasing a ball the next she just keeled over dead. It was her heart we didn't know she showed no sign she didn't suffer so we were thankful of that. we still miss her..she had a lovley temprement. a rescue Pup from the R.S.P.C.A. a bit of everything...can't bring myself to get another..she is a tough act to follow.

If I had to choose the way my dog would die I would pick the way your dog went Anne. It's the hardest thing to take them and know you are making the choice for the dog. I have said no more but I must admit when I think of Ziggy and how he kept me company and how you never feel alone when you have that animal in your life. Ziggy hated to see me cry and all 75lbs of him would come and sit on my knee also when I was sneezing I think he thought I was crying. We have had three dogs over the years and each one has given so much love and happiness. On reading all the posting I see we all have something in common our love for our animals and the heartache we are left with when they move on to greener pastures. My daughter said yesterday that she hopes Ziggy meets up with Scoobydoo and Muffin and they all make friends. Have to stop now making me sad again.

This is such a sad topic to talk about.
So sorry to hear about your loss Avril.
I have 2 cavalier king charles and I nearly lost one of them last year. It was a very sad time as the vet said she had cancer and would have to be on medication every day for the rest of her life. She was very poorly for a while. She is still with us (costing me a fortune I may add!) They are both a great additional to my family.

Hugs to all those mourning doggy companions. You can't spend so many years with an animal and not be cut up when they go.
