GoogleFight

I saw this today, it's an interesting idea, you put two search terms into the googlefight box and see which one wins.

Here's one I did earlier

As this is about Google - here goes. From the Google U.K. home page I went to "more" and selected Maps from the Menu. Put my post code in and waited for results, enlarged the image to its maximum and selected the satellite view.

There it was, an aerial view of my house, but on checking I found that the information was at least five years out of date. I really thought that Google would at least have been "up to date" with its images. Later, perhaps!!!!!

William:

We've lived in our house since November 1999. It was built earlier that year. Both Google Earth and its Microsoft rival still show an empty lot. Google's data is so sparse, you can only just make out the street. I input my sister's address in Leyland and it's there in beautiful detail!

Interestingly, we're only about 80 miles from Microsoft HQ!

Google Maps takes it's imagery from a variety of sources, a full sweep of the country was done many years ago by The Ordnance Survey. The plane (singular) took off from Blackpool sweeping the country taking photographs. These were then used all over the place from flight simulator graphics to Lancashire County Council MARIO. I worked at the airport and got to go in the plane and have a look at the camera used, gyroscopically controlled, shooting images through a hole in the floor of the plane. The lens was quite big from memory.

If you want the most detailed view of leyland then LCC's MARIO probably has the best resolution at no cost.

If you download the latest version of Google Earth then you will be able to use the view menu to switch from Earth to Sky. You can see the sky as it is from your location and you can zoom in on it to see nebulas etc. with images taken from sources like the hubble telescope.

Lancashire's MARIO is fantastic. I checked on the site and could tell that the photo was taken when my Mum was at work (the car was not in the driveway).

The photos of my old place of work also let me guess who was in that day by checking out the cars.

I downloaded the `new???` version this week and (like many others) was disappointed to see just how out of date the maps still are.
The recent showing of TV`s `Coast` program was interesting regarding the OS survey aircraft that David spoke about. I couldn`t believe just how quickly errosion takes place on our Lancashire coast.
