I love using the touchpad, if you set it up to your own preferences it's not too sensitive for you and it will work as described.
Another possible solution to the problem might have been that you had an autoclick selected, this feature (if you have it) saves you from clicking on things. When you arrive at an item and stop moving your pointer, a click is generated on your behalf. If this is the case on your laptop then simply uncheck that option.
