Antony Gormley

I was able to visit his "Another World" at Crosby beach this afternoon. Gormley sculpted amongst other things Angel Of The North. This creation at Corby consisting of dozens of full size naked men reaching out to sea is due to be dismantled some time this year due to Health and Safety ( YAWN) reasons. Apparently the powers that be are worried they will be sued by people going out into the mouth of the Mersey and getting trapped by the tide. Unbelievable. I took few photos, none hold a candle to those on the artist's website.

We went to see the exhibition last year. I was very disappointed by the graffiti on the sculptures - some people have no soul. The exhibition was due to be removed from Crosby anyway, but some people had petitioned for it to be kept there permanently. That's when others waded in with a load of objections. But let's not be selfish - let another venue play host to the artwork. After all, Crosby was the piece's fourth home. I believe it was supposed to be going to New York next.

We didn't see any graffiti, but any artist having an outside exhibition gets that in this country. When we lived just south of Bath on the borders of Somerset and Wiltshire a French artist spent weeks setting up an exhibition in The Circus. The day after it opened, it was totally wrecked, as was a floral portrait of Sir Tom Finney last year. It took months to grow the plants and one night for some moron to wreck it.

I'm glad they're still there as I haven't seen them yet, apparently there's some fairly rare lichen? growing on them, or some such organism.

If there's a rare lichen Caroline surely they can't be moved.[Wink]

I'm pleased to say that the council has agreed they can remain a permanent feature, as long as a couple of them are moved for safety reasons. Common sense for once.

It was barnacles now I think!
See http://arts.guardian.co.uk/art/visualart...23,00.html More than a couple to be moved, but will they reposition them??

I read in the paper today that 81 of the statues are to remain. The article didn't say what would happen to the 19 being removed, but Anthony Gormley is placing 30 of his statues around London's skyline soon. This is the article:
