If you want to see how the criminals do this, then go to http://www.moneysupermarket.com/mediacentre/PressReleaseDocs/prx471.rtf
Read to the last section, where the chap in charge of the survery carried out explains how easy it is to access personal details from PCs. [:0]

If you have a wireless connection it is possible for people to sit outside your house and gain access to your broadband connection, they may get on the Internet but not necessarily be able to get on your computer.

If you have a wireless connection then you should have set various items in it that hide it from others, set a password that only you know, and also give the wireless router a new name that is not obvious, if you didn't do all this then you are probably at risk.

The problem is that most people will buy a wireless kit from a shop and set it up themselves ignoring any security implications. I have wifi on my phone and its so common to find unsecured connections all over the place.

If people don't go on a course/read a book about securing their computer, or get someone to do it for them, then they can't complain when others getting on their system.

We no longer use our wireless connection, but hubby reassured me at the weekend that when we did use it (and if we go back to it in the future), we have the highest level of security on it. For the time being we're cable only, but it is worrying to think that someone sitting in a car parked outside your house could access your personal details if you're using a wireless set-up.
