Can anybody tell me just what it's like to travel on the train these days? For instance from Lostock Hall to Blackpool.
For example the comparison with the bus as regards cost and convenience and please explain what it means when one has to make a change or two en route from A-B.
Does it mean you get off one train and the other is close behind on the same platform or is it a pain to have to run from one point of the station to another to catch a train run by another company.
Should I be very afraid if I try to get say from Lostock Hall to Carlisle?
Not TOO many horror stories please.
Cheers from a country cousin.

HI Lady G.
Got myself a Britrail flexipass (they must be purchased before leaving for Britain).... last couple of times I visited GB.
Last trip was Aug.2002 for 2months.
I had a ball ... seniors automatically travel 1st class on the BR pass.
Local trains Lostock Hall to B/pool etc don't have 1st but they are fast and frequent.
The only poor trip I had was when I foolishly rode the train from Machester on a Sunday after a soccer game ....NEVER do that!!!!
I travelled everywhere and had help changing trains at every mannned station.
If you are worried .. plan your trip using the internet ... try the British Rail site ... lots of info there.
I don't know if you guys can get the same deal that we have in Canada but it's well worth a look see!!
I stayed in Euxton and Leyland and used the BR free info phone line for many of my train adventures!!
The other money saver is to get yourself an 18pound(I think that's the price may be a bit more but worth every penny) ... year pass this gives you humongous discounts on all your rail travel AND if you enquire at the local station or on the phone and book your tickets in advance you get even cheaper rates!!!!
Wish I was planning another trip ... have fun!!
The Duchess aka Karen.

Last time I used the train (Virgin Rail), Euston-Preston, I found it very good. If you pick your times carefully, it's remarkably cheap too. London-Preston was 15 quid round trip (two years ago) by picking times carefully. it's 90 pounds if you don't. Virgin Rail's web site was very useful.
I don't think I'd try to get to/from Lostock Hall, though as it's not on the main line. Take the bus to Preston and train from there.
