Leyland pubs
#31
Out of Leyland, I kmow, but I wonder if the Sumpter Horse is still there at the top of the hill that leads from New Lane, Penwortham, to Middleforth.

What's more to the point, can anyone tell me just what a Sumpter Horse is?

I thought the Sumpter Horse was the pub with the very big parking lot, just before the road dog-legs over the railway. In an article a couple of months back in the LEP, the landlord was bemoaning the drop in business.

He referred back to the pre-M6 days when the car park would be full of coaches taking people to Blackpool. I remember seeing Yelloway and Midland Red buses in there by the dozens.

I don't remember the name of the one at the very top of Pear Tree Brow, but I think it was a Greenall-Whitley pub.

I went in the one at the top of Pear Tree Brow once, and once only. I had thought it was called The Pear Tree but that's in Bamber Bridge I think. The Sumpter Horse which as Frank said is just before the bridge is still under threat of demolition. It's name means a pack animal or beast of burden ( old English).

Some Ex L&B meet every month at The Railway pub. Used to be Leyland Gates but the noise in there was so loud they couldn't hear each other talk. It's certainly been turned around though from when it was The Cherry Tree.

Funny that Frank mentioned Greenall Whitleys in an earlier post. Last time I was in UK (early 2010) I was asked to attend a business meeting with a risk consultancy in Warrington. The place is located in what was the Greenalls Brewery, its now an industrial estate full of little units inside the old brewery building, on the banks of the glistening Manchester Ship canal. I did notice also on that trip that lots of the high cast iron bridges over the Manchester Ship Canal are looking like they would benefit from a coat of fresh rust. I also as a result of that trip have to complement the UK on the current state of Pubs following the smoking ban, and the improvement in pub grub - it was fantastic, and very tasty.
