Have the other Booths stores survived- Longton, Penwortham, Fulwood, Chorley? Last year I heard a report on R.4 that they were doing a successful line in milk from the Trough of Bowland..... sounded like a good move to me .

Caroline, Booths just appear to be cutting out `the dead wood`. They wqould not have closed Leyland had they had room to expand the sales area and extend the car park. The same problem arose at Penwortham due to lack of parking space.
My niece works at the new Penwortham super store and reckons that it`s always very busy.

Thanks for that, Jim- what a relief! When I was an Art Student we rented out Booths Restaurant in Preston for one of our parties. Sad to say, there was quite a bit of damage done so that was the first and last! I saw none of this, having spent the evening with my head in the sink of the Ladies - I blame pints of Guinness swiftly downed in Addison's and Yates' wine lodge beforehand. I'm older and wiser now, I think.....

FURIOUS town centre traders in Leyland have lashed out at supermarket plans which they claim could cost them their livelihoods. Bosses at Leyland Garage Service Centre and Duchy Car Body Repairs, both located on Towngate, say they have nowhere to go following the announcement of plans to build a new Aldi store on their land. The two companies were warned they had to relocate by landlords Valley House Holdings after a deal with the supermarket giants was struck. An application has been submitted to South Ribble Council by Aldi to build a new store with car parking facilities on the site at the junction of Towngate and Westgate. It is expected to be considered by the authority's planning committee later this summer. Valley House say they have given the firms plenty of help to move premises. But Gordon Martin, proprietor of Leyland Garage Service Centre, claims the future looks bleak for his business and staff. Mr Martin says he has not been offered an alternative site in Leyland town centre and claims he will lose regular customers if the business is moved out of town. He said: "We have been here 12 years but now we are being forced to move out. The rug is being taken from under our feet and we have nowhere to go. "We cannot find anywhere to relocate in the area. It's just impossible to find somewhere suitable. "The council is not helping. Every time we come up with some place, they say we have to go to Moss Side. That will lose us customers. "There's at least three families with children who are affected by this. If we can't find somewhere, there's three or four of us who could lose our jobs." http://www.leylandtoday.co.uk/ViewArticle.aspx?SectionID=77&ArticleID=822262

SUPERMARKET giants Aldi want to alter their planning application for a new store in Leyland. The German chain were given permission to build a 1,201sq metre store at the junction of Towngate and Westgate in May this year. This week councillors on South Ribble Council's planning committee will have before them a new application to expand the plans. Bosses at the company want to increase the size of the store by 126sq metres to accommodate machinery and add to the store floorspace. The siting of the store would be identical to the original application, but would be extended on the western side of the building. As part of the original application Aldi agreed to fund a bus stop with new real time information signs and traffic calming measures on Westgate following calls from local residents. http://www.leylandtoday.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=77&ArticleID=855906 What impressed me about this article was the bus stop quote: As part of the original application Aldi agreed to fund a bus stop with new real time information signs and traffic calming measures I've never seen a bus stop that incorporates traffic calming measures

It`s quite simple Martin, every time a bus stops, so does all the following traffic. As Towngate is always busy (and narrow) nothing can overtake. [:p].
With regards to the planning extension, the move was forced upon Aldi because of local opposition to the noise that would be generated by the waste compactor in the yard. They have simply moved it indoors to get around the problem.
