I agree Noel about correcting someone else but this is different this is a topic about grammer and it is fun or it's fun.... Dotty I love your sentence. It is funny what gets stuck in your mind. How about i before e except after C.

It's actually E before I except after Y (as in "yield" for example). Also, "Tesco" is short for (something" Company. So you really shouldn't (IMO) put an "s" on the end at all. Similarly The Boeing Company isn't "Boeing's", Wal-Mart isn't "Wal Mart's" (a lot of people refer to it as Mall-Wart), Sainsburys probably should be Sainsbury's, just as Booths should be "Booth's".

Isn't English wonderful?

Regarding the Americanism - ' very unique ' - surely this is an inappropriate expression and it's often stated by North American people . The word 'unique' implies singularity - a 'one off' , if there were more than one it wouldn't be unique, and consequently adding the 'very' is inappropriate !

It is even looked over in many exam papers, as long as its readable the kids get a mark- forget all that we were so cleverly taught at Balshaws. I agree with you Noel. sandy

What put a smile on my face this morning is that this thread has nearly all of the stalwarts of the forum as I call you, waffling on about the sort of petty thing my Mother goes on about on a regular basis ! Now dont take this the wrong way as it is sweet and definitely an age thing !May I just add, stalwart is not a bad description as was once pointed out to me, it is a complimentary synonym ! Think staunch [Wink] Good to see the "twittergate" pugnacity was swept aside with that good old Dunkirk spirit, keep it up folks ! [Smile]

I before e except after c is what I learnt Frank. But what about Leicester?

Here's another, I actually mispronounced this myself. Live. It can be an adjective or a verb. Spelt the same but pronounced differently and having a different meaning.
Live life to the full, it's a verb and pronounced livv. Live show. Adjective, and pronounced as if the i is eye. No wonder the french talk funny when they speak English, even I puzzled at that one yesterday, I've forgotten what was advertised but I had to say it several times to get the correct pronunciation.

Wind is another. Two nouns and two verbs for this one.
