I found the forum via a social network, so strongly disagree that they are a waste of time.

I've also found funding for charities and community groups, information on council plans, volunteering opportunities and made contacts who are now important to me.

The net is what you make of it and perhaps more importantly (for this thread) there are things in place to deal with those who choose to abuse it.

APFaz, local news can publish good works and retain a strong element of control that the social networking sites seem incabable of doing, even though you say there are things in place to deal with it, it seems to me they fulfill no particular function that is not allready in place, I do however realise the net itself can be used for good or evil.

I was going to say the same thing about sociaol networks. You can choose who can see you and what information you give out.

My major objection to Facebook is the amount of junk e-mails it generates. Every day, Eileen gets at least half a dozen telling her one or more of her "friends" has posted an updsate. I would estimate that 75% of the emails in our inbox are from Facebook.

same here Frank, when I was on it I got loads of e-mail from strangers perporting to be friends of friends and so on, I didn`t reply and then got abusive e-mails from them for not including them in my facebook, what was worse was that it became very difficult to get off the damn thing, and loads of dross about a virtual farm, it was childish and invasive, thank god after a long time and refering to a good computer buff friend of mine we finally killed the thing, it cannot be described as good. I viewed it as I found it, RUBBISH, it was 6 years ago, maybe its got a little better, but it will not tempt me back, I know some Police forces do not like it.

You can turn the emails off in facebook. I used to get lots of messages telling what everyone had been doing but I soon stopped that.

Can only refer to my previous quote.

It is what you make of it.

Although I have a profile I don't really do Facebook by choice and yes most do perform functions that can be found in other places but the ones I use put it all under one roof so to speak with little need for any searching.
