Just been browsing through. Ian Bleasdale (Josh in Casualty) was a year under me at Balshaw's, The family lived in Lynton Avenue and went to Turpin Green Methodists.
Think my brother (Anacortes Damp)is mixing up the Lawtons with the Christies. It was the latter who lived in Church Road, the Lawtons lived in Pembroke Place (off Sandy Lane). Did you know that since Jan 1st 2006, their son John has been Professor SIR John Lawton?

I wonder if anyone remebers my grand dad I never met him as he died 2 weeks before I was born in 1964. He was a real character in Lyland for many years - he was called Clarence Livesey.
He and my Nan owned the shop on Leyland Lane (opposite the Shell garage)and my Mum was born there.
He was the Chairman of the Conservative Club and had strong links with Preston North End. He was very involved in charities in the town too.
We have an article which appeared in either the Lancashire Evening Post or Leyland Guardian which reported on his funeral - where it states that crowds lined the streets and St Andrew's Church was overflowing - also a number Of North End players also attended. I wish I had known him and wonder if anyone remembers him.

Hi Jo,
I remember Clarence Livesey well, and as you say he was heavily involved with the Conservative Club on Towngate, and remember the annual Trips to Blackpool that he and several of the members organised for members children to a Pantomime and Party at the Winter Gardens usually culminating at the end of the trip with a stick of Blackpool Rock with Uncle Clarence running through the centre of it. I seem to remember the name of the Manager of the Winter Gardens at that time was Frank Oddie, and went along with my Father several times to meet with him, and was lucky enough to meet many of the stars of the day, including Alma Cogan, Shani Wallis, Jimmy Jewel and Ben Warris, Yana, Jimmy Clitheroe, The Raspos Trio, Morton Frazer Harmonica Gang to name just a few. I had already left Leyland when he died, but seem to remember being told that he died in a Car around Christmas Time ... A long time ago ...

Thank you MJo - all you say is true - I have heard some of this before from my Mum - He actually died at home on Golden Hill Lane - which was our family home (it was built by Clarence's dad - my great grandad. Thanks again for your replay - if you remember anything else please let me know.[:I]quote:

I know a celebrity who came from leyland. Kay Purcell the actress, she was in Emmerdale as Cynthia Daggert, she has appeared in countless programmes and is in "My parents are aliens" as a social worker at the moment.
I went to school with her at Wellfield High and she was always into drama then.
I saw her recently in Tesco and my local shop because she lives locally and she was still as friendly as ever.
