If anyone charges against your credit card with your consent, call the credit card company and direct them not to pay. They will send you some paperwork to sign, David is right, it's illegal to make any payment. If my credit card company refused to stop payment I would pay off the correct balance and change companies, there are plenty clamouring for business. A letter would then be written to the relevant authority complaining about their lack of lawful compliance. The credit card company works for you, and gets paid by you, nobody else.

Most rental agreements contain a clause or addendum which, on signing the document, gives them the right to charge your credit card for fines. Handling charges may also be applied. Similarly with costs related to damage insurance signed to your card.

Anyone who signs up for such an agreement as described , shouldn't grouse ,they pretty well deserve what they get !!

They may of course have signed in ignorance. If you sign for a car rental and aren't told specifically that the company reserves the right to take out whatever it thinks is right from your credit card, how on earth do you find it in the 2 pages of small print of conditions. I shall look in future, it's never ever occured to me that this could a) happen, b) be legal

If you drove through a speed camera using a hire car, why would the hire company charge you for it? The police will only bill the driver and not the company.

How would that work? Surely the fine would be sent to the loan company?

The police would send a prosecution notice to the loan company. It would have a section on it that they would have to fill in naming the driver. But the hire company would not be prosecuted as long as they provided the information.

Having been photographed allegedly speeding, or running a red light, are you in Britain now 'Guilty as Photographed', or can you demand your day in court as we can in the USA ?
