Cuerden Strategic Investment Site

Green-field sites are a pleasant break between communities, but there is no economic benefit if they just lie fallow. It used to be that all those fields between the north end of Stanifield Lane and the bridge over the Lostock were actively in agricultural production, either as dairy farms or planted crops. They made a reasonable living for the owners and/or tenants and paid their taxes.

In this time of corporate mega-farms, it's probable that the acreage is too small to pay well enough as arable land and there's no tax revenue coming in to the council. Unfortunately, that often means it gets bought by speculators, built up and then the new development fails into dereliction.
